If your hair has volume concerns, then you've come to the right place! Because I feel your pain! Over the years, I've had to deal with all those strands that stayed straight against all odds. I struggled to find tricks to combat the weight of gravity on my capillarity. 👩🏻
The little bonus is that thanks to my work as a beauty editor, I've been able to meet and interview tons of talented hairdressers and steal their best tips. And so I've collected all their tips, which I'm sharing in this special voluminous hair dossier. You'll be ready to create maximum volume with minimum effort.
These 10 pro tips have been tried, tested and approved by the Reines the team.
Some tips can be incorporated into your daily routine, while others require more organization and should be reserved for special occasions.
So here are our 10 tips for fuller hair.
Chances are, you have a favorite place to part your hair strands. It's where your hair likes to fall naturally, either in the middle or on one side. The problem is that this is also where your hair is at its flattest, and you're used to it staying that way.
If the hair doesn't stay in place, move your parting while your hair is still damp. For maximum volume, try a deep side part on the opposite side to the “normal” side.
If you're doing this on dry hair, I recommend spraying lightly with hairspray to hold it in place. As well as providing plenty of volume, this hairstyle is incredibly fashionable.
Avoid using overly brutal movements that could create massive tangles (which are a nightmare to untangle) and could also hurt you. You can create soft volume by brushing the roots upside down, using a large, long-haired brush that's gentle on your scalp.
My favorite technique, which makes crimping invisible, is to tie the top layer of hair in half and brush the rest, working section by section. Holding each section taut and away from the head, I brush the roots in three quick downward strokes. To make the volume last, spray each brushed area with hairspray. Once you've finished all the sections, continue with the rest of the hair that was tied up. And your hairstyle is naturally fuller.
Our other solution is to crimp the hair at the roots. Simply crimping at the roots, in the lower layers of the hair, is a very effective way of roughing up the texture and making it stand out from the scalp. For this you'll need a hair waffle iron to make pretty crimps on hair. 😊
It only takes a few minutes and, unlike curling irons and flat irons, requires no training. The top layer of hair completely hides the crimping so it's undetectable.
Haven't perfected your blow-drying technique yet? Don't worry, the best shortcut to a voluminous blow-dry is to flip your hair upside down. I know it sounds too easy, but that's exactly how my hairdresser dries my hair every time I get a haircut (he then finishes my ends with a flat iron, for a “straight with volume” look).
The reason this works is that, upside down, your roots automatically detach from your scalp. And that's how you want them to dry. I like to use this method so that my hair is about 90% dry, and then I can do my final straightening with a round brush.
Note: if you have bangs, always dry them right side up first!
Products and serums that stimulate and pamper roots are your friends. Think of them as the scaffolding of your hairstyle. They provide structure and support for any enhancement you manually create near the roots, helping your style last all day (or even several days).
Look for a product specially designed for fine hair, so that it doesn't weigh you down, and apply it all over your head, directly to the scalp (I like John Frieda® Luxurious Volume lotion). Be sure to use it on damp hair, as root boosters don't work once hair is dry. And don't be afraid to spread your volumizing products, then add structuring foam or use a blow-dryer on the lengths.
Everyone's forgotten about curlers these days. And yet they're great! The idea is simple and effective. Just put them in place while you apply your make-up and, 20 minutes later, you'll have soft volume.
All you have to do is choose the direction of your waves. Rolling away from the face gives you glamorous Hollywood waves, while toward the face creates a more vintage effect. To make your volume last all day long, spray each section with hairspray before rolling, and let the rollers cool completely before removing them. Then brush and shape your waves for a soft, modern look.
Volume-enhancing shampoos are an easy solution that you've probably already thought of. And yet you'd be surprised at the difference a good shampoo can make to your volume goals.
My rule of thumb is to use clear or at least translucent products, as these are the least likely to be loaded with heavy superfluous ingredients. Nothing white or opaque for my hair! So, it's possible to find volumizing shampoos that don't strip your hair and are color-safe.
Go easy on the conditioner too, as it can weigh your hair down and give less volume. I only apply it to the lower half or third of my hair and make sure to rinse thoroughly.
It's hard not to mention our favorite hair accessory, which, among all its many qualities, offers well-maintained volume in your hair.
The trick with the headband is to tie your hair up in a half ponytail or bun and create volume on top. The headband reinforces the volume by pulling the hair back from the front. Since we love it, here's another impressive demonstration:

Don't underestimate the power of a simple chignon. It's an easy trick that can be used every night!
After your evening shower, pull your hair up into a high, loose bun while it's still damp, and secure it with a scrunchie. Your hair will dry as it separates from the scalp, so when you wake up, you'll have phenomenal volume.
Another easy way to get volume while you sleep is to use a stretchy fabric headband. Wear it over your forehead and wrap sections of damp hair around it until all the hair is rolled up, securing with pins if necessary. Take it off the next morning, and you'll have gorgeous Hollywood waves.
After washing your hair, do you wait until the second or third day to use your dry shampoo? You might want to think again. By the time you notice your hair is dirty, your scalp's natural oils are already sabotaging your volume, moving along the hair shaft and starting to weigh down your strands.
I recommend a preventive approach: coat your scalp with a layer of dry shampoo as soon as you've finished drying. This way, there's already a barrier to the oil, stopping it in its tracks and allowing your voluminous hairstyle to last longer. Bonus: dry shampoo is an innate volumizer. Spray it on the lengths too, to create even more texture.
If you don't lighten your hair, then here's a little secret for those of you who do. It's not just about the color, it's also about the texture it gives you. A little bleach adds body and roughens the hair cuticle, making it less “slippery”. In fact, it's a godsend for anyone with flat hair who wants a voluminous style.
But you don't need a whole new hair color to benefit from the volumizing effect of bleaching. A few strands, placed in the underlayers of your hair and in a tone-on-tone color, can give you just enough lift, without having to worry about regrowth.
